What Should My Guy Wear for Photos

So you want to have a photo session and you want to know what should my guy wear for photos? Here are a few fashion tips for him! Keep in mind dressing up for images never goes out of style!

Layered Looks

Next time you walk by a store in the mall,  you’ll notice the male mannequins and models are always wearing several layers at once. Layers on men look great on camera. Adding another layer will bring an extra dimension and visual interest to your photos. Blazers and coats up the level of any look. If the temperature permits, he could even consider adding a v-neck sweater, long-sleeved collared shirt and tie underneath. Don’t be afraid to get a little creative with layers!

Mix It Up

Many of our guys love to mix a suit coat, blazer or sport coat with a different pant color. It adds some extra visual interest and breaks up the color tones. I am a  big fan of this fresh take on a timeless classic. In fact, look for inspiration online. Find a few things you like and show your guy what you have in mind for him!

If Casual is His Thing

Admit it, some men don’t enjoy getting dressed up and that is ok. Keep it casual! A nice pair of jeans and a neutral shirt will work just fine! I have several of those in my studio wardrobe and dad is more than welcome to wear anything I have.  The outfits you select won’t matter nearly as much as the memories you make together. Your future memories are the most important thing to me and I want your session to be a time for you to just be yourselves and enjoy it. Have fun together. Laugh a lot. And I’ll take care of the rest!

It’s All in the Details

Brown leather dress shoes compliment almost every look, whether he’s wearing a full suit or a blazer and colored pants. Ties, bowties, belts, tie clips, suspenders, and watches are sharp compliments to any outfit for men. If you bring two outfits to the session, you can start with a traditional necktie and belt, then switch to suspenders and a bow tie for your second look. If two looks are too stressful, no problem! One will do the trick! You can still mix and match accessories to complement your dresses without doing a full change during the session. So, either way, it’s a win.

Just remember to make sure he likes what you have selected before you buy. And most importantly make sure it is comfortable for him. Nothing worse than a guy showing up for a session and feeling awkward about what he is wearing. Most men don’t enjoy getting their images taken in the first place. So we don’t want to add stress to the situation. Make it fun and let him have a say on what he gets to wear as you gently guide his selection.

I have some great ideas on how to get your man on board for a photo session. Plus a few other blog posts on what to wear to help you with your selection.

Now that I have given you some great ideas. Here are a few things not to wear:  No logos, wrinkled clothing, small busy patterns or small thin stripes.
