What Should We Wear To Our Photo Shoot

The number one question I get asked about a photo shoot is …what should we wear to our photo shoot?

The wardrobe you choose to wear can really change the overall look of your final images.  The three things that I am specific about are clothing, session location, and time of day. These three things can completely change the look of an image.

Clients have the opportunity to borrow clothing from my Studio Wardrobe.  This appeals to a lot of clients, as they get to come to the studio and choose what they love most.  It’s also inexpensive!

I have a closet full of beautiful gowns, dresses and even shirts for dad’s to wear! And all my clients have access to it once they have booked with me!

But if you are wanting to wear your everyday clothing here are a few tips I can help you with!

Coordinate and Compliment

You never want to look back on your images and think to yourself…”what was I thinking.”  Making clothing selections might sound daunting but trust me, it’s easier than you think! Go timeless and you will not regret it! Try a softer palette that has different tonal ranges of the same shades. Neutral colors are an easy go-to;  cream, beige, tan, sand, blush pink, rose, pink, pale peach, gray and white all seamlessly creates a classic look.

You can never go wrong with a long flowy maxi dress. It compliments every body type and it’s comfortable! Or better yet a form-fitting maxi dress! It will show off your beautiful curves and is very flattering. It’s actually my favorite for pregnant women! And remember I have a closet full of these at your disposal!

Layers and Textures

Another tip I like to suggest with a monotone color palette is to add in a variety of textures! It adds interest without being distracting. Try looking for items like lace, waffle, tweed, thermal, knitted items, ruffles, cashmere, or even a fun faux fur!  Adding different layers of clothing and accessories can add another dimension to the overall texture of your images.

If a dress is not your thing, then a pair of jeans and a tight shirt with a cute pair of boots will look amazing. There’s nothing wrong with going a little more simple. You can always add a few cute accessories like a knitted scarf for you and thermal textured shirt for your guy! (PS I have some great tips for prepping your man for a photo shoot )

Patterns

Patterns can add visual interest and texture as long as they are done in moderation! For a general rule, I suggest only one person wear a subtle pattern. While the other person is in a solid color that matches one of the colors in the pattern. It will play off as being very complimentary!

Shoes

Shoes can make or break an outfit. Slipping on a pair of boots or some ballet flats can tie everything together. Just remember to make sure shoes are not scuffed up or dirty and are appropriate for the outfit! If you are having a studio session, shoes aren’t important.  If you are having a field session, please make sure your shoes are neutral.  This means no black, neon tennis shoes, etc.  You may even want to go barefoot in the field.
