Motherhood and Doorways

I cried in the doorway.
It was the day we listed our house–1 week ago.
The view? The girls’ room. Perfectly clean, yet full of a mess of memories.
Mom’s and doorways kind of have a love/hate relationship.
We lean on them to watch our babies sleep and then we softly curse them when we accidentally whack our newborn’s head on them. (You know you’ve done it!).
We watch from them.
We watch them play on the top bunk and pray no one falls off. We watch them read books by the window. We watch them learn to love each other even when sharing is hard.
We pray in them. “Please help the baby to stop crying–it’s 2 a.m.”, “please help me know what to say to my child who is waiting in timeout”, “please help her stop throwing up and her fever to come down”, “please help them sleep while the tooth fairy makes its visit”.
We use them to brace ourselves–because the excuses are coming for why they can’t clean up their room. Or because we’re exhausted, but Motherhood won’t let us sit down to rest.
We learn them. So we can effortlessly turn the knob just right so the “click” won’t wake the baby.
We look through them. Like a picture frame that captures the perfect childhood–or the messiest mess.
We inspect them. For damage caused by slamming doors because, “the monsters were coming!”, “we were playing hide n’ seek!” or “you’re the meanest Mom ever!”
But mostly–we miss them.
Because we LIVED in them.
Because at some point, we pass THROUGH them.
It’s been said, the Lord is oftentimes found in the details of our lives.
But sometimes–we find Him in the doorways.
So the next time you cry, lean, watch, pray, or brace yourself in a doorway–I bet you’re not alone.
