Grandma Margie

written by grandchildren Erin, Amber and DaNell Anderson

The only positive thing about losing a loved one is reflecting on a lifetime and remembering all the successes and failures, the good and even bad characteristics that make a person a part of a family. But, trying to summarize a life in a few paragraphs isn’t easy, especially for someone like our Grandma Margie. Those closest to Grandma know that she has a secretive and mystical side and shared personal information only as she felt necessary… and that was ok. This is what made her such an interesting and unique person and our mother/grandmother.

  • Margie Arntt was born Sept 18, 1923 in Denver, Colorado to Sam and Christina Arntt. She is survived by her three boys; Roger (wife Mary), Danny, and Rick (wife Kandi), 8 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her soul mate, our grandfather, Glen Amos, grandson Scott Glen Anderson, great grandson, Dallas Martin, her parents and her siblings.

  • She spent her childhood years on a farm in Torrington, Wyoming. She married the love of her life Glen Amos Anderson on Sept 10, 1942. They met in Toole, Utah while Grandpa was in the Navy and Grandma worked at the Army Depot. They rode a bus along with another couple to Pocatello, Idaho to get married. They didn’t have enough money for bus fare for the way home for everyone so Grandma and her friend rode the bus and the boys hitch hiked. That was the start of their adventure……They were married for 73 years. The level of commitment they had for one another was an amazing example to all of us.

  • Grandma always stocked the freezer full of ice cream, from the Schwanns man, push pops and chocolate bars, she had candy kisses or chocolate orange sticks & a pantry full of potato chips ….. for the grand-kids and great grand-kids! And not to mention the sugar cubes that I know my kids were constantly sneaking!

  • Grandma loved to play poker machines in her younger years and Grandpa was more than happy to sit and visit with people he didn’t even know while she played! She sure was lucky at her favorite pastime!

  • Grandma and Grandpa had numerous cars and trucks during their life and Grandma’s favorite was her CHEV. It was a blue, two door, ‘74 Chevrolet Impala. She always regretted getting rid of that car and still talked about it long after she had gave up her driver’s license.

  • She loved SHOES!!!! Always wearing some sort of wedge or heel made her feel better about being short in stature! She was meticulous about the way she dressed and her hair. Kandi would do her hair every Sunday for years! For some time Danell took over the job and mom taught her how to do hair just how grandma liked it and became the master of doing elderly hair, all the grandmas would request her.

  • Erin had mentioned how proud he was that they spent 73-years together. I’m sure like he says no one can remember a time that they were apart for any length of time. Maybe a quick drive for grandpa in the old Betty Boop truck to sneak a quick smoke and then a small splash of turpentine to get rid of the smell before he went back to grandma!! But nothing longer than a couple hours……

  • A good story Clay told us about was back in the late 60s early 70s when he use to take his moms peanut butter, ride his tricycle down to grandmas and she would make peanut butter cookies. As he got bigger she always had jobs for him and would overpay him. She really spoiled her grand kids good. During her last days she was still thinking about other people and not so worried about herself. She told Clay she was ready to be with Grandpa again but did not want to hurt her boys!

  • When Danell and I were little Grandma and Grandpa lived in Spring Creek, we would get so excited to be able to go spend the night there. They would make us Velveeta shells and cheese, while we played with their 8 track player jamming to some Johnny Cash and playing with our imaginary friends.  We came up with our imaginary friends out there because they didn’t have many kids toys, Grandma would wrap up towels or blankets like there was a doll or baby inside, and Grandpa had convinced us he built his shed off the back of the house particularly for us to play, even though now we know that was really for his storage. We would play with our friends for hours out there! Eventually they moved right next door to us in Carlin, how lucky were we, not many kids get to grow up with their Grandma and Grandpa living right in the back yard!

  • One of our favorite past times with Grandma when we were little was baking cakes, we would make a cake and then eat the whole crust off of it fresh out of the oven, grandma loved it when it was a crispy crust and soft and warm in the middle ……Grandpa would come home from the shop and be like, “what happened to the cake”! Every time, like he didn’t know! Then we would have to put frosting on what was left for him!

  • Lisa remembers how she worked with her at the store and the bowling alley in Mountain Pass, CA. Grandma used to take her to Las Vegas shopping all the time and even back then she loved to gamble. Lisa would give her change and if Grams won she would give Lisa the money. Dallen and Lisa loved going to visit her and Grandpa. They will both be truly be missed!!

We all have our special memories of Grandma Margie as she touched our lives over her 92 years of life. Its comforting to know that she can now be back with grandpa Glen, where she wanted to be. It’s true what my mom would always say, nobody will ever love you like your parents except for your Grandparents! We love  you Gma Margie!
